Pheidole sp

This is another average medium size species of Pheidole ant with major workers at around 5 mm and minor workers at around 3 mm.

Here we see that one major worker (center) is actually larger than the other (left) but this however do not qualify as dimorphism  in the major worker caste as sometimes this happens due to nutritional differences

An apparent difference in the size of the two major workers (above)

Cardiocondyla sp

Cardiocondyla are small to tiny ants that are mostly monomorphic and polygnynous. This species is the largest one documented in this blog.

Pristomyrmex sp

Pristomyrmex trachylissus looks very similar to Pristomyrmex bicolor with some notable differences the most obvious of which is the pronotal spines of P. bicolor are forward and outward pointing while in this species they are slightly backward pointing. This species is dimorphic.

A previously posted species which I had listed as Pristomyrmex trachylissus is actually Pristomyrmex bicolor

The pronotal spines point outward
and slightly towards the posterior.

Pheidole sp

The Pheidole genus is one of the most species rich among Myrmicinae ants but the greater majority of the species are found only in forest and very heavily wooded areas. Generally the genus has three main phenotype sizes. Of these are where the major workers are around 5 mm (i.e. 4 to 6 mm) and minor workers around 3mm; the major workers are around 3 mm  and the minor workers around 2 mm; and the majors workers are below 2.5 mm and the minor workers below 1.5 mm.

This species, Pheidole sp35 according to the those collected by this blog, is from this context of the larger size phenotype. This species also has the among the largest size difference between the major workers (5 mm) and minor workers (2 mm).
